His work provokes strong reactions with viewers and we talk about this and the impact that this has on his work. We also talk about his new body of work of bold text pieces in which he is trying to move away from the working class tag which has been associated with him and the reasons behind this.

The Doors of Perception – Florence Hutchings

The Doors of Perception – Florence Hutchings

Portrait of artist Florence Hutchings in her London studio

Delphian Gallery is proud to present ‘Doors of Perception’, Florence Hutchings’ second solo show with Delphian Gallery. Florence Hutchings is an exciting young artist and previous winner of Delphian Gallery’s Open Call 2018 whilst she was still studying for her BA at Slade School of Fine Art. She has since shown at Saatchi Gallery’s blockbuster exhibition ‘Kaleidoscope’ and exhibited her work internationally.

The title of the exhibition is a reference to the Aldous Huxley novel of the same name within which psychedelic experiences shift world perspectives in new and sublime ways.

‘The Doors of Perception’ features a new series of paintings and drawings inspired by the artists’ spatial understanding of walking through her apartment. Hutchings’ organic works replicate the dimensions of the average size of a door. Doors dominate the domestic imagination as gateway to space and time in the everyday. Alongside these, Two Lamps at Night, an ambitious largescale painting of a living room interior on four separate canvases, will be shown for the first time. Using a physical process, the artist continually moved the painting corner to corner and upside down letting the work evolve spontaneously.

Using repetitive subject matter of domesticity, Hutchings uses gestural strokes, bold colours, and abstracted forms to break through the boundaries of the mundane; challenging our own perspective interpretations of reality in the everyday.

“The work for this show really started to come together when I made a fold out sketchbook that walks the viewer round my entire flat, from the living room to the bedroom to the bathroom and finishing in the kitchen. Within my work I’ve always been interested  in the everyday interior that surrounds me so when making this book I realised something I had been missing out on- the doors that led you into each interior. For this reason I found the average size of a door (200x90cm) and made 6 different door paintings as well as paper work in this ratio. This format was challenging but helped to enrich the merging of  working from life and the abstract making the viewer sometimes question what it is they are looking at, an element I enjoy within my work. Alongside this series I have made a large scale living room interior painting titled Two Lamps at Night this 3mx2.4m work is the first time I have used the device of making one large scale piece on four separate canvases. This process was great fun and allowed me to physically move the painting from corner to corner and upside down when it wasn’t going in the right direction allowing my painting to evolve naturally . I’m very excited to being showing my work for the first time ever in Paris as it is my favourite city I’ve visited for the art collections there. Bonnard, Picasso, Matisse and Braque have been massive influences on these and many other of my paintings so I feel honoured to show in a city where their work is shown in abundance.” – Florence Hutchings

Portrait of Rachael McCully the australian artist in her studio next to large scale abstract canvasses

Whilst Australian artist Rachael McCully was in London she joined us on the Delphian Podcast to talk about her process, taking inspiration from everyday objects, and juggling a home life with producing work. We also talk about the subject of using art as a form of therapy and her experiences with this. Rachael’s abstract works combine bold and muted colours to create perfectly balanced, harmonious compositions which are calm and serene – an antidote to our often hectic lives.

Delphian X Guts – Group Exhibition

Delphian X Guts

Delphian Gallery and Guts Gallery are pleased to present our joint exhibition Delphian X Guts.

Socially, politically, and economically, we are living in trying times. These difficulties create division, and division breeds competition. We endeavour to support all art-world practitioners wherever possible, whether they reciprocate or otherwise, and to collaborate with what would (by some) be called our direct competitors. We believe that the art-world would be a much more open, supportive, and progressive place to work if we started working together, rather than pulling apart. For this reason, Delphian and Guts have decided to join forces.

Exhibiting Artists

Douglas Cantor, Florence Hutchings, Geoffrey Bohm, Igor Moritz, Jake Grewal, Lauren Roche, Morteza Khakshoor, Rachael McCully, Sebastian Eriksson, Sunyoung Hwang, Tania Alvarez, Valerie Savchits.
